How and when to visit Plitvice lakes?

Roughly halfway in between Zagreb and Zadar city Croatia’s most popular tourist attraction is located. Plitvice lakes was granted UNESCO World Heritage status back in the 1979.

This unique destination proud itself with sixteen lakes connected by a series of waterfalls, easy walking trails, stunning viewpoints over the turquoise water and lively wildlife.

Deep woodland is populated by deer’s, bears, wolves and very rare bird species that allures bird watchers from all over the world. 

Plitvice Lakes National Park covers over 73,000 acres all divided in three sections; lower section, where the Big Waterfall is situated and where you can take a boat to take you to the upper section with the prettiest boardwalk trails. Whichever you decided on exploring the most, you will not be wrong.

Stunning waterfalls and lake views are guaranteed in both sections. In this one-day trip, you get to walk along the trails, road the electric boat, walk the hiking trails on the cliffs of the side of the lakes, explore viewpoints and really took in the view from ‘Veliki Slap’ (Eng. Big Waterfall) viewpoint.

Winter wonderland in Plitvice lakes

Let’s talk a bit about visiting Plitvice during winter time. The phrase ‘winter wonderland’ is made of visitors that went to the lakes during winter months.

Showy pathways, calmness of the woods and beautiful wildlife that surrounds the lakes are what attracts everyone! If you land in Zagreb, capital city, the drive to the lakes takes around 2 and a half hours. Still a very scenic drive to get to the enchanting showy Plitvice Lakes.

The colors might not be as bright as during the summer time, however during the winter time you get to see the purest white color you’ve ever seen! Just imagine standing at the viewpoint looking over the lakes that couldn’t be brighter due to the untouched snow around it.
